So, I'll do my best to backup everything I can off my laptop. I'll try "upgrading" to Windows XP in place (oh god how that's gonna suck!). If that doesn't work, I'll try blowing away the partition and reinstalling Windows 2000, then updating it to the latest SP, then copying my old files over it, a few at a time. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll just reinstall clean Windows 2000, lose a bunch of the Sony-specific drivers I have no CD for, and just suck it up, you know?

But on my new PC, I'll prevent this problem. I'll have separate partitions for everything, most of them small enough to burn to one CD each.

Ironically, this morning I found a PC in the trash with the HD still in it, along with 128Mb of memory and some cards. Only thing missing is the power supply. At the very least, either the RAM or the HD or the motherboard is still good. If I'm lucky and the former owner was an idiot, it's a software problem and all I have to do is reinstall an OS! Easy go, easy come, I guess.
